Star fo “Freebie and the Bean,” “Herbie Goes Bananas,” and “The Pope Must Diet,”Alex Rocco, died at the spry age of 73.

Rocco was most noted for playing gangster Moe Greene in “The Godfather.”  That and he started the Boston Irish Gang War of the 1960s… wait…  He what?!?!?

Apparently, before he slapped Fredo around in the casino, Alex was a hanger-on with the Winter Hill Gang (not the “hip hop, Hippie to the hippie, The hip, hip a hop, and you don’t stop” kind of Gang, that’s the Sugarhill Gang). An unwanted advance toward Rocco’s then girlfriend on Labor Day, 1961 touched off the Boston Irish Gang War of the 1960s. Georgie McLaughlin who made the advance was beaten by Winter Hill Gang members.  That’s where they hit, hit and chop, and don’t stop.

But after being Boston’s very own Archduke Ferdinand, he moved to California where he took acting lessons from Leonard Nimoy.  He graduated when he could finally do the live-long-and-prosper hand-thing.

He went to Frankie F. Coppola to be cast in “The Godfather.”  he figured he was a shoe-in to play some Italian gangster.  Boy was he surprised when he was cast to play a JEWISH gangster. Things tended to be more racist back then.

“People on the golf course will say, ‘Hey, Alex, would you call my dad and leave a line from ‘The Godfather?” I say, ‘OK. “I buy you out, you don’t buy me out!” “He was bangin’ cocktail waitresses two at a time …” “Don’t you know who I am?” ‘ But I enjoy doing it. It’s fun. I’ve been leaving Moe Greene messages for 40 years.”

Rocco reached the pinnacle of his career when he landed the role of Charlie Polniaczek.  “Playing Jo Polniaczek’s father was truly rewarding.  Mainly because she was so much hotter than Blair.”

This hit goes to: ME!  This brings me up to 60 points!  It also resets the bar so that if you have less than 60, you officially suck!).

Nancy Reagan, somehow, continues to live.

Happy pooling,
