Say “Hey…”

One of the greatest baseball players ever, possibly the greatest, Willie Mays, died at the spry age of 93.

Mays was a quadruple threat: he had a great batting average (.301 for his career),he was a power hitter (660 home runs), he had speed (338 stolen bases), and his masterful fielding was matched only by his throwing arm (12 golden gloves).

Mays, back when the Giants were from New York.

He was known as “The Say Hey Kid” because journalist Barney Kremenko used the nickname in reference to Mays’ way of greeting his teammates. “[Mays] would blurt, ‘Say who,’ ‘Say what,’ ‘Say where,’ ‘Say hey.” 

“When I played ball, I tried to make sure everybody enjoyed what I was doing,” Mays told NPR in 2010. “I made the clubhouse guy fit me a cap that when I ran, the wind gets up in the bottom and it flies right off. People love that kind of stuff.”

Mays is known for making “The Catch.”  Yes, a play so spectacular, it is The Catch.  

It was a tie game in the world series with a runner in scoring position.  A line drive was hit out to center field and was chased down by Mays, what would have been a game-winning hit became an out.  

But then, as he was still moving back, he turned and threw the ball so damned hard, he prevented the runner from scoring.  The force of throwing toward home while running toward the outfield made him stumble.  Seriously, watch this thing:
